Photo Friday #46

SCIENCENTER, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA   |   TRAVELS WITH KID

After a hardcore run at Disneyland the day before we were up for some milder adventure ... Venice Beach in the morning and a science museum in the afternoon. Ahhh. The life of a tourist.

As you would expect, there were loads of interactive displays that kept Spud busy and happy. The structures/architecture section was his favourite handsdown. Hubs liked the space area. And I was fond of the new aquarium installation.

Photo Friday #45: Venice Beach

VENICE BEACH, CALIFORNIA  |  TRAVELS WITH KID

Venice Beach is not the first place you think of when you think of travelling with kids. But we were in the neighbourhood, so to speak, and took a couple of hours to wander along the boardwalk and beach. Spud was oblivious to most of the, say, questionable aspects of the area and had a good time taking in the street performers, general people watching, and window shopping the various vendors. Hey, it even has a decent playground on the beach!

One of the highlights for all of us was the graffiti ("Psst. Spud. Don't look behind you." Maybe this explains the nightmares.)

And watching the artists in action was pretty cool.

Muscle beach is crazy! Watching beefy men, in skimpy outfits, pumping iron on the beach was, well, an awkward, oddly voyeuristic experience ... that I wouldn't miss! I wouldn't dare take photos of them, but the building, with its concrete dumbbells is cool.

Ending with some quality playground time.

Next stop, the California ScienCentre.

LAGUNA BEACH, CALIFORNIA REVISITED   |   TRAVELS WITH KID

We were in Laguna Beach around the same time last year. One of my favourite pictures from that time is posted here. Spud humoured me and let me take another one of him at the same spot. I love that tree a lot.

Walking on the beach there is so lovely. We spotted such pretty flora.

The fauna in this case were literally clouds of small black ground bugs that swarmed away as we approached them. While you can't see the bugs here ... it sort of explains the kid's behaviour.

Time for a little footie.

As the sun was setting there was time for some sea gazing.

One of those pesky waves snuck up on Spud and got him wet to his knees.

Time to go back to the hotel and get ready for bed. Tomorrow: sand castles.

LEGOLAND | TRAVELS WITH THE KID
LegoLand: Our Highlights ... in mostly pictures.

Getting a LegoLand drivers license.

Miniland! Reproductions of several American areas constructed with 20 million LEGO bricks in 1:20 scale. The detail is incredible.

A fantastic playground [actually made of mostly wood, but great nonetheless]

Random cool things made out of Lego ... everywhere you look.

And fantastic shopping. Especially for those who don't have a Lego store at home, like us. Spud spent some of his own money on pay-by-weight Lego bricks and this cool mat which folds up into a cubed Lego storage container.

Preparing visits to LegoLand is made even more fun with this interactive map.

THE GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY | TRAVELS WITH THE KID IN LA

Spud felt pretty special staying out so late, past dark. We were looking forward to spending some quality time with the lawn telescopes to see what we could see in the night sky. Unfortunately, when the winds are high, they don't put them out.

But it's a wonderful outdoor space with loads to look at and appreciate nonetheless.

And the view was great.

And then there's all that cool sciency-spacey stuff on the inside.

Hey, look, Foucault's Pendulum.

All-in-all, one of the highlights of our LA trip.

THE GETTY | TRAVELS WITH KID IN LA
We marveled at the architecture.

Appreciated the fountains.

Took in the views.

And then we participated in a little 30 minute art class for munchkins [we signed up for it in the main lobby a couple of hours in advance, as they fill up quickly].

The teacher introduced us to their collection of 250 year old French furniture and asked us to examine the rooms looking for examples of "nature" motifs carved in the the exhibit pieces to share with the group later. We observed lions feet, birds, grapes, apples etc. Spud was surprisingly taken in by the ornate details and insisted that we photograph a number of the pieces.

Next, we were introduced to a couple of pots as examples of collaborative work between two countries. The teacher said "Now you and your parents are going to be France and China, working together, decorating your own pot". Very cute.

You can see the pot we used for inspiration in the background here.

Hubs was France as he added the gold as directed by Spud. And Spud and I did our best to be China. Now Spud has a little keepsake box as a souvenir.

Unfortunately we ran out of time quickly and didn't even get a chance to do this! Must go back one day.
