Colour Theory: Make 100 Colours

What a fun way to break in a new set of watercolours! Make 100 colours. Or 60, in our case, as we only had small watercolour paper on hand. It turned out to be a nicely meditative way to learn about colour theory that was more challenging than I expected.

The kid normally loves colour mixing more than painting itself but he petered out about half way, stating he wanted to finish it tomorrow. Interestingly, though, during clean up, he started playing with various colours in our plastic egg carton spending more time colouring mixing in water than he did on paper. Whatever floats your boat!

Baby Showers: Fabric Pens + Onesies

Spud's piano teacher of almost 4 years is leaving us. With much sadness. But she's off having twins which is super exciting and we are very happy for her. And sad for us.

As a goodbye present Spud decorated a couple of onesies with a black Sharpie Fabric Pen in a music motif. He's pretty excited to give them to her.

I got this idea from my own baby shower ... way back when. I sure worked with a creative bunch.

Look what they did with a yellow marker! The only time spit up is funny, really.

Because I worked for a hockey team at the time, there were more than a few hockey references. Check out the jock strap and chest hair!

 Classic.

Who knew a whale had such fine motor skills ...

Meet the Spuds.

Coffee Filter Snowflakes

Coffee filters make the best snowflakes. They are already round and symmetrical. Simply fold in half, then in thirds, and then in half again. And I like their translucent nature.

The only downside is you really have to figure out a way to flatten them. You could iron them I suppose. We pressed them between our heaviest books overnight. That seemed to do the trick.

Our First Time Lapse: Niagara Falls, Lit Up

TRAVELS WITH KID  |  NIAGARA FALLS

We propped up our little iPhone on the window sill of our hotel around 4 pm and let it shoot periodically, using a time lapse app, until the lights went out at midnight. We ended up with 4 minutes of moving mist and colour. Looking forward to making more time lapse movies with the kid!

A Paper Weaving Morning

Paper weaving. Classic paper craft that for some reason, Spud and I have never done together before. I used to love this kind of activity when I was his age.

Practiced skills: fine motor, creative decision making, patience, focus on details, and accepting imperfections in your work.

I'm sure there are million different ways to go about it. First we cut our paper into strips. Then taped down our vertical rhythm to hold it still while we slid on the horizontal bits. Finally we folded back the ends and taped them down. Spud decided to tape it on his IKEA square storage unit — livens it up quite a bit!

Summer Fun Passport: Drawing Castles

Lazy days of drawing and learning new skills — that's what Summer days are made of. Some might think that summer is over, now that school is back. But, here, the weather has been perpetually blissful and we're not back in school yet! Most of the province is not back, due to our teacher's strike/lockout situation but the real reason we're not back in school is that we are homeschooling this year! A very big decision. But we are up for the challenge. Here's hoping there will be more days like these.

Since we are not finished with summer yet, we are continuing with our summer bucket list for the month of September. Check out our working Summer Bucket list here and all our past Summer Fun entries here.

Make Fantastic Mistakes Poster

So, I am taking this course called "How to Learn Math" through Stanford University's online offerings and it's been, well, a little life-changing. Not only is it helping with ways to guide Spud through his interactions with math but it's changing my relationship with it as well!

This poster is one of my assignments for the lesson focussing on the miracle of making errors and what wonderful things it does to brain growth and development. I'm sure we will be referring to this regularly throughout the upcoming school year.

Summer Fun Passport: Make a Kiwi Crate Project

It's always so exciting to see what surprises are inside the Kiwi Crate. For example, a star hole punch! That's a keeper! And a free (adorable) deck of cards. Not to mention the cool projects inside. Spud had a great time making this lantern yesterday. The star stickers glow in the dark. The tea light shimmers through the coloured vellum nicely. And we learned a bit about constellations.

We've posted about Kiwi Crate before ... here and here.

Easter Eggs: Food Colouring, Rubber Bands and Sharpies

I had a lot of fun with the white and especially the silver metallic Sharpie.

Here are Spud's creations, including a football!

You can always expect Hubs' creations to go in an unexpected direction ... national eggs!

LEGO Wall!

A LEGO wall of our very own. This project has been on my mind since I posted about one like it on Apartment Therapy a couple of years ago. It wasn't hard to get the kid or the Hubs on side. We did a little research and this is the way we decided to go about it.

We picked the colour. With much debate. I wanted grey. But those panels are bigger and more expensive per square inch. But I REALLY didn't want the green. I couldn't bear the green. So, we went with blue.

We picked the wall with the least amount of surface area. Because LEGO is expensive! We ordered our 60 panels online as it turns out that our local LEGO store has a policy of selling a maximum of 5 pieces at any one time.

Hubs screwed in hardboard into the studs. Then he unscrewed them all. Because he realized that gluing them onto the wall before screwing them in would give them that extra bit of stability that would be so important when you are pulling LEGO pieces off the wall. Nobody wants the wall to give way when you tug at it. So he added some adhesive and screwed them back in. There were a couple of heavy sighs and an eye roll or two but in the end it was deemed well worth it.

Since each plate has rounded corners you can see a tiny gap where they join up. We decided to paint in behind where the base plates would meet up. We got some matched paint that worked great. And then we practiced by putting up the base plates temporarily with masking tape.

We also painted a frame around the wall as we weren't sure if we wanted to have to cut a whack of base plates to make them reach from wall to wall. In the end, it's very easy to cut them it turns out, with just a standard industrial cutter and a metal straight edge. We may end up buying a few more base plates to finish off around the edges of the wall.

Next, it was time for tiling. Spud was very helpful in getting each base plate out of its package. Hubs cut the few tiles we had to. Hubs and Spud took turns sanding the backside of each one.

Then it was glueing time.

Note that LEGO pieces themselves work brilliantly at holding it all in place for the 24 hour curing time required for the glue to dry.

Here are some close ups of the little collaborative mosaic-like project we worked on as a family this weekend. It was inspired by a little friend who thoughtfully brought Spud a "room warming" present full of little, unique LEGO bricks. It was a really fun project to work on together. It's terribly addictive in fact — my fingers are SO sore from prying apart so many little pieces. But we enjoyed the process and we are all a little proud of the way it came out.

Activity Advent Day #19: Make Orange Ornaments

The easiest ornaments we've made yet. We popped the orange slices in the oven at the lowest setting for 4 hours, flipping them once half way through. They aren't completely dry which is likely why the colour is still so delicious. I got this tip from here.

These are the last to go on our Christmas Branch; we are finally ready for Santa. Check out all our other Activity Advent entries here.

Activity Advent Day #12: Make a Holiday Pillow Case

White pillow case and some fabric markers ... and you are good to go! This one includes "wii 3 kings", "a partridge in a pear tree", a poor house with a "cold baby outside", silver bells, 3 caroling bells, a manger alone in the distance, and a lake with 3 ships ... among others ... If we carry this tradition on, he has the other side to decorate next year.

Activity Advent Day #6: String Cranberries

We've done this before ... highly recommend using a giant blunt needle. Easy to thread. Fewer tears due to accidental stabbings.
